Description

The first "Monash Workshop on Numerical PDEs" will be held at Monash University's School of Mathematical Sciences on February 15-19 2016. Please join us in Melbourne during the Australian summer for this exciting workshop on a variety of aspects of leading contemporary numerical PDE research. A broad selection of topics will be covered, including, among others: multilevel methods, CFD, finite elements, mimetic schemes, virtual finite elements, numerical relativity, high-dimensional problems, and HPC.

Deadline for registration and participation: There is no registration fee, but all participants must register. Please register and submit title/abstract for your contributed presentation on this website by January 15. (The precise format of the workshop will be determined depending on the number of participants. We anticipate contributed presentations of about 20 minutes in length, and a poster session.)

Accommodation: Some suggestions for where you can book your accommodation for the workshop:

  • Mannix College (adjacent to campus; hotel style rooms (Gryphon House) or student rooms, meals included)
  • Normanby House (adjacent to campus; self-contained studio apartments with cooking facilities, attractive rates)
  • Gateway on Monash Hotel (20min walking distance to campus)
  • serviced apartments in the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) (e.g., Punthill) (typically 45 minutes to campus via train/bus)
  • Ibis Glen Waverley (20min bus ride to campus; also: direct trains to Melbourne CBD in 35 minutes)
  • Apartments of Waverley (20 min bus ride to campus; also: direct trains to Melbourne CBD in 35 minutes)

Getting there:

  • From the Melbourne (Tullamarine) airport to the CBD: take the skybus shuttle ($18 for a one-way trip), or a cab (~$60, available at taxi lines outside the terminal).
  • From the CBD to the Monash Clayton campus: take the train from any of the stations in the CBD (Melbourne Central, Flinders, Parliament, Southern Cross, Flagstaff) towards any of "Cranbourne"/"Pakenham"/"Dandenong"/"Westall" (you may have to change trains at Flinders Station). Get off at "Huntingdale Railway Station" and take the bus route 601 (towards Monash University), get off at "Monash University/Wellington Rd (Clayton)".

  • When at the entry of the Monash Clayton campus, take Rainforest Walk towards the north until you reach number 9. See the campus map.

Note: to use the public transportation in Melbourne (Trains, bus, trams), you first need to buy a "myki" card, and then top it up to pay for your travels. Myki cards can be bought from myki machines, consumer desks in major railway stations, from 7-11 stores, some pharmacies, etc. Details on the myki website.

Student and postdoc travel support: Limited travel support will be available. Please fill out this travel support application form and email it to the workshop organizers by December 15, 2015.

Visa Requirements: Most international attendees will have to apply for a visa of type 601 (electronic travel authority, online), 651 (eVisitor, online), or 600 (visitor visa, online or by mail), depending on citizenship. In case you need an invitation letter for visa purposes, you can email the organizers.

Social functions: A welcome reception will be held on campus the evening of 15 February. There will also be a conference BBQ on Wednesday evening. Details for both will be provided closer to the start of the conference.
